The optimal calcification temperature is between 26 and 27C. Above or below that and calcification slows dramatically.
Reef-building corals cannot tolerate water temperatures below 64° Fahrenheit (18° Celsius). Many grow optimally in water temperatures between 73° and 84° Fahrenheit (23°–29°Celsius), but some can tolerate temperatures as high as 104° Fahrenheit (40° Celsius) for short periods.Jan 7, 2020

so how much swing is acceptable as heater so to on and off cycle? On my Red Sea Reefer 250 build I am using 125W Eheim heater and the temp swing between 76 to 78 due to the on and off cylce. Is this okay and normal?

IMO controlled temperature swings could be beneficial for reef environments, in Natural reefs temperature takes a big part of coral behaviour.

how do you control temp swing? I set my heater at 78 already but it still swings

More water volume and more heating power. Also keeping the home the same temp helps a lot.

my tank is Red Sea reefer 250 (65 gallon total). I guess most people can't add more water volume as it also means growing your tank or sump.

My heater is done. Tank is at 72 have a nem, leather and torch. Ordered a tru temp off amazon won’t be here till the 3. Should I be worried? Local Petco had only really small heaters. Wanted the brs package but they don’t have any in stock

Controlling the temperature around the tank is probably the best way to control the temperature on your reef, for example air conditioning. Try and keep your house at a few degrees difference from the tank. That way your chiller/heater are not always playing catch up.

On my new build...which i love has a canopy. I installed fans that keep my tank temp between 76.6 - 78.3....this is with me keeping my house at 72 degrees! I live in Texas and its not summer yet!! So i installed a chiller, change my home temp to 75 and the chiller is keeping my tank between 76.2 - 76.7....im now happy :)

What is the best temperature for your reef aquarium?
77?
78?
79?
80?
81?

Does a lower temp help control algae growth?

Does higher Temp benefit coral growth?

How important is temp stability?

What's you experience?
Right now my tank sets at 80.8 to 81 and has been that way since setting it up but I would like it to be around 78-79 especially once I start to put soft corals in or even around 76-77

I have a softie tank that runs around 79. Why would you want it cooler?

Temp is 78 - 79 , fluctuates during heater cycle. The only time it's been over that temp was when ac broke down. Put frozen bottles in the tank and kept temp where it needed to be.

Yep, Texas heat in the summer. Lol

Most sites that sell corals suggest for softies that the temp be around 76-78 so that is why I was wanting to have it lower for when I start putting softies in the tank. should I leave it where it is at? will it be fine at 80?

Mine stay at 80. Without a heater... Even if in the chamber is 72.

Probably the pumps heat the water.

i dont heat my tanks if i dont have to, my room is like 78 degrees year round so my heaters never run. if like power goes out im fine cause it takes forever for my room to get below 70
