I don’t know anything other than API is apparently horrible (which is what I use because it’s all I have been able to find) what is a better option?

ALK - Hanna is the best. Red Sea Pro or Salifert.
Ca - I use Red Sea Pro but I bet Salifert is good also. Hanna does not have a great reputation.
Mg - I use Salifert. I cannot get consistent results from Red Sea.
Phosphate - Hanna ULR is the only test kit that is sensitive enough to be fully functional.
Nitrate - I use Red Sea Pro. It works down to .25 ppm.
Ammonia - Red Sea is pretty good and the ammonia badges are good to use on quarantine tanks.
Nitrite - Red Sea worked ok for me.
