Best timers?

I use Intermatic digital timers with built-in battery backup. They even switch to daylight savings time and back again!

I use my apex. Nice to be able to use my phone to access and monitor them from any room or any location that I get signal :)

I use intermatic plug in digital timers. They have the battery backup to continue telling time in case of power outages. They also have the ability to do multiple programs through the day if needed for dosing. I also only buy the grounded plug timers as well.

With that said, the only thinbg I run now with them is my fuge light. The rest is on my APEX and I would never go back to timers.

Considering that something like a ReefKeeper Lite (8 outlets at $120) costs less than the amount I've spent on lamp timers over time (over half of which are dead), I have a hard time recommending lamp timers.

Add on all the extra potential something like a ReefKeeper brings…and that your wiring will be much nicer - fewer extension cables, fewer power strips due to timers blocking plugs, etc. (which are extra, necessary expenses with normal timers)...

Add all that up and a controller like a ReefKeeper seems like a no-brainer.

I would stick with Intermatic if you must use a lamp timer. And I would stick to "heavy duty" rated timers if you have the option. I've had equally bad luck with digital and mechanical timers failing, FWIW.

Personally if I could go back in time, I'd never spend a dime on stand-alone timers. While my ReefKeeper is not perfect, it has been so nice vs my timers. And so much more capable if you ever want to set up dosers, etc.

Hope this helps!

Apex all the way.
I had a $5 Walmart one fail on me and dosed my tank with a gallon of cal in one day...never again!

Apex here. But if suggest any basic controller. The flexibility and security alone is worth it..

I have used Walmart timers, coralife timer power strips, and my reefkeeper. For my display light it has its own built in timer, the rest is on reefkeeper. Although for the money, I wish o would have known about reef angel before I ordered RKL.
