Best treatment against AEFW on A. millepora

Hi,

At my work at a public aquarium we have treated a lot of Acropora corals to get rid of Acropora Eating Flatworms. I have tried three different brands of coral dips and mostly with good results. But when it comes to Acropora millepora it seems like the coral doesn't handle the dip well at all. Smaller frags sometimes survives but the larger ones often dies slowly in one to two months time. And it's after only one dip. Other Acropora species doing okey even after three dips(during three weeks).
We have used Tropic Marine Coral Cure and Coral RX lately.

So does anybody have any ideas of what we can do to get better results?

I'd say try bayer but as a public aquarium that's probably a huge no no because it's technically illegal. Biggest suggestion I have is err on the lighter side of using less coral rx than recommended and ensure no more than 10 minutes in the dip.

Bayer will be easier on the corals than CoralRx. CoralRx makes stuff drop off of the coral faster.

You could investigate using straight Lugols solution. Iodine used to be our only dip back in the dark days of reefkeeing like the 1990s and 2000s when everything was easier and more people had better results.

Yes, I've been thinking of reducing the treatment time and dosing of Coral RX if I don't find anything else that sounds better.

Bayer liquid concentrate for soil and turf. MUST BE THE SOIL AND TURF FORMULA.

I haven't killed one Acropora with Bayer.

+1 on using Bayer. It's my go to and I haven't lost any Acros yet from using it.

He's in sweden so I'm guessing that he cant' get bayer there. And even if he could it'd be illegal to use.

You can lay down in your seat when a jet is landing in Europe. I would not assume that anything in the US is illegal in Sweden.

It is this stuff... I am pretty sure that Amazon ships to Sweden. Isn't Bayer still headquartered in Germany?

It is a very gentle coral dip. I put a powerhead in there in a small tank to make sure and keep it stirred up. Rinse well.

You have to use a substantial amount, so make sure that it is to tank temperature before you mix it.

I never had a problem with Milles and CoralRx, but I have dipped everything in Bayer and it comes out OK, even deepwaters and smooths skinned stuff.

I have used Bayer on all my coral never had a loss from using it. I know someone who left some SPS and softies in a bucket with a powerhead for 6 hours (on accident) because he had to go deal with something and everything survived.

Can you use potassium chloride? You can buy it as water softener pellets here in the States.

If you need something that is made and labeled for aquarium use, you have the ones like CoralRx, Revive and Lugols. Lugols is iodine. The others are all pretty similar with mostly the same results. Bayer is like none of these.

Not really a nightmare but irritating. Most of the other Acropora is doing okey after dips but A. millepora is not. And A.millepora is one of few species we can do genetic tests on.
That's why I really want to find a good treatment for that species.

Potassium dip - 2 teaspoons of KCl (potassium chloride... Can be found as water softener pellets at Home Depot) per gallon of water. Will raise solution roughly 1200 ppm of Potassium to a total of 1600 ppm (most teef tanks are at 400 ppm already), causing flatworms to fly off coral and all animals to die. Dip for 30 mins.

FWIW, Bayer works great for me but have been using the potassium chloride more lately as I was trying to move away from using a pesticide for my own safety and my tank's inhabitants.

Acropora Surhasoni was the only acro species that I found sensitive to Bayer.
