Best Treatment for Green Turf Algae

Hey Everyone,

What additive have you used to combat Green Turf Algae?

I know that Vibrant will reduce nutrient levels and starve some algae out, but I've also heard of success using Fluconazole.

If you've tried either with success or lack of success (or other products/experiences), please share.

Be sure you have gha and not bryopsis. Manual removal and get your phos and nitrate in check. Routine water changes.. Cut back on importing aka less light less food.

just won vs. bryopsis with increasing my CUC, and dosing vibrant and mb7 weekly. i would look to diversifying your CUC first before doing anything else. once that happens then look at lowering your light period, lowering food and manually removing for a few days to starve out the algae. the CUC will do the rest.

Yeah, it's definitely Green Turf Algae (not byropsis or GHA). I've had both before.

I'm in the process of manual removal and decreased feedings, but I was hoping to also use an additive in addition to this to really cut it back.

I have two urchins, and they do eat patches, but they need some reinforcements.

I do have a pretty diverse CUC (have some hermits/crabs, urchins, turbo snails, etc.) but I'm thinking I need to kick start this somehow. I know patience is key, but it can also be a detriment if you let it go for too long without taking additional action.

i recommend a pitho crab or two. they definitely kick started my victory against bryopsis. essentially just like emerald crabs, but venture out more than they do.

If the offending rock can be removed, a direct spray of peroxide will kill the visible algae. For whatever reason certain CUC members are drawn to it to polish it off as well.

I know I'm going to be in the minority here, but I've used and really like vibrant. My tanks are cleaner than ever before (in 25 years of reefing).

Funny you mention these guys. I have a few in there right now, but may need to add more.

Yeah, this will likely be phase one. My tank will be going fallow for a few months, so I'll likely take this as an opportunity to remove some of the rock and treat as you describe above, and see if that helps kickstart this before going the Vibrant/Reeflux route.

Ultimately, I think I've landed on a phased approach before attacking with chemicals: 1) Begin the fallow period (very little food/nutrients being added should help starve out the algae), 2) Remove the offending rockwork and treat with peroxide (rinsing off thoroughly with saltwater so as to remove any dead/dying algae and not reintroduce the nutrients back into the tank), 3) See how this looks near the end of the fallow period, and if the algae is still present, I might consider chemically attacking with Vibrant or Reeflux (as a last resort).

I'll also be adding some sort of Rabbitfish and Tangs to the tank once the fallow period is over, but I know turf algae is not necessarily the most appetizing to herbivorous fish (I've only seen my urchins eat the stuff).

I don't believe I have gotten lost in my reefing journey (although I'm not certain what you mean by this). Just another bump in the road of this rewarding (but sometimes maddening) hobby.

I have been doing this for quite a while, but will be the first to admit that I don't know it all. Having said that, I'm confident I can get this tank back on track so that it is what I envisioned it to be when I started it.

3-4 ninja star snails and a pincusion urchin will do wonders
