So I bought a new 45 gallon cube aquarium for a display tank downstairs. I’m getting live rock shipped to me and I want to know if the best way to cycle the new tank would be to just throw the live rock into the salt water I will have in the tank. I’ll probably take some water from my existing tank and add it into my new tank to help. Here is the live rock that I am going to purchase.

There's likely to be some die off in shipping, but I wouldn't use any additives to help cycle. It'll do fine and you don't want to cause any issues with the fauna you paid top dollar for. Remember to feed it.

With freshwater I have heard people use sponge filters or filter media from a mature tank. I wonder if that would work with saltwater also.

You could always try using a dirty filter sock or pour skimmage in New tank and let it filter out.
