Hey Guys, I didn't plan on doing any Mechanical filtration but after my tank start up, and see how my sand really makes a mess and clouds the water. I am thinking of doing it now but I'm curious whats the best way to do it.. Ive seen people layer pads, of course we've all seen the filter sock. But whats the most effective way to do it ?

I've always preferred filter socks. Red sea makes a really nice 225 micron nylon mesh sock. All you have you have to do is rinse it in the sink to clean it, much easier than felt.

Media tray with filter floss is what I use. Main reason is I do not enjoy changing filter socks every few days. I go roughly two weeks between filter pad changes, and change between water changes.

I made a removable tray that holds a piece of layered filter floss. I like the option of being able to remove it and run it when I feel the need. Making a small custom tray that sits below my water level flow in my biocube ensures all my tank water that recirculates will pass through it. The floss I use has 2 different layers to grab different size particles. Another bonus is I can buy a large sheet of the media cheap and cut about 20 filters from it. This allows me to just throw them out every 3 days when running them (you can watch BRS TV study that suggested this as an ideal amount of time to keep them before cleaning or changing)

Roll filters
I'm beta testing X filter, which is a roll filter with different media from 9 micron to 32 micron, uses IR sensor instead of float switch . It has made life so easy for me.

Innovitect is the company and I believe Steve is looking to launch it in the States
