Hello everyone! I am back (for now). I have been busy with work and trying to find a new job that I haven't been on here much (miss me? Of course you did lol) In my absence from here I finally acquired all the gizmos and barrels to start making my own salt water.. My question is how should I mix it? I have a marineland 1200 maxi jet to mix with but don't know how it should be set up. Power head? Or laminar flow? And should I mount it to my salt mixing barrel somehow or just let it rest at the bottom? Thanks in advance!

i usually just put a powerhead in the bucket, and let it run, every now and then i pick up the powerhead and move it around, sometimes swirling it. I usually just lay it in the bucket in no specific fashion, and I use the same exact powerhead for my mixing needs.

I use my old return pump from the old 125g tank to start with. Puts alot of flow in the bucket and gets the salt mixed really good. After the first day of mixing I switch out the old return pump for a smaller pump, I am mixing 27g in a 32g Brute container. I found that the old return pump gets the water to warm, thats why I switch out to the smaller pump after the salt is mixed really good and then do the water change on the third day.

So should I have the maxi jet in laminar flow mode or just put it in there with no attachments to mix the water?

I use a maxi jet 1200 with no attachments. I also let it mix for no less than 24 hours, before I use it. So I know that everything has completely dissolved and the ph is correct. I also suggest testing your alk, cal, and phos with each new batch of salt.

I too use the maxi jet 1200 to mix salt. I use one with the propeller attachment though.

My 1200 just sits at the bottom of the bucket when mixing salt, dont really need to attach it to the side or anything just wherever really :) as long as it doesnt look like a fountain, though that would look kinda neat but maybe a bit messy lol

I just grab two power heads that are the most accessible from my excess parts container and let the water circulate overnight.

Same here! Don't need a heater with those old China made pumps... LoL
