What's the best way to start your coral collection when you are just starting out? By that I mean the most affordable way? Frag packs, ebay, wait for black Friday? I saw that world wide coral has a sale coming up.

Start with the easiest (which is often the cheapest) like green star polyps and master that for a couple months before moving on to the next easiest. Do one kind of coral at a time but research it completely before purchasing

I started with zoas. I also started with alveopora which us doing fine but i really should have held off on purchasing that for a few months.

Definitely in your local reef club, Craigslist but dip dip dip and definitely inspect their tank. Ask about any pests or issues

As what @Hyde2406 dip dip dip dip now matter what even if you get it from a huge coral dealer still dip it. Some of these pest will absolutely destroy your tank and you will be killing you self for not dipping. But for your first coral I would go with zoas, Gsp,leather are great pretty much most of the soft corals are easy. But make sure you RESEARCH the animal before you buy it. You don't want to impulse buy cause it looks nice then come to find out your tank can't keep it alive.
