Best way to use GFO in a reactor.I have a single BRS reactor is it better to use a fine mesh bag in the reactor or put the GFO between the sponges.

Between the sponges, GFO is more effective when it gently tumbles. Dont let it tumble like in a storm. Use GFO only when PO4 increases and dont run it 24/7

As already said you need to use a reactor with the GFO between the sponges for best results and set it so that the GFO gently moves around like simmering water.

As a general guide you want to maintain phosphate very low so around 0.03ppm and I would say run it 24/7 and that will keep your phosphate in check provided your feeding fish and they will of course release nutrients back into the water.

If you currently have a high phosphate reading, and you also have corals, I would use smaller amounts of GFO to start with and reduce the phosphate slowly so you don’t affect the corals health.

Just remember when you start using it, you may have to change the GFO on a regular basis as it will become spent quickly as it absorbs the phosphate from the system. As it does the time between changes will lengthen

I personally use rhowaphos in a reactor 24/7

Why do you like rhowaphos over GFO?

When using gfo in brs reactor you don’t use sponges. When using carbon you use the sponges so you hold carbon in place not allowing it to tumble which will cause the carbon from making dust that gets blown out of reactor. For gfo material you want it to tumble, works better and doesn’t turn into a block fused/rusted together inside the reactor

Use just a little bit and change it often. If you leave it in the tank for long enough to get some organic coating, then it will not work anymore. Go slow... while lower P is usually a good thing, going too fast or getting too low is bad.
