I will say I'm a newbie. Started tank October 2015. Tank has been okay, no major issues. I wanted some color the go with my 2 clowns, 2 cardinals fire fish and 6-line wrasse; so I added a bicolor dotty-back (pretty color) about 5-6 months ago. Needless to say I recently lost 2 fish. Do I send it to timeout?

Did you observe the dotty-back acting aggressive?

Normally with that stocking list I would expect the 6-line to be the aggressive fish. They are known to have attitudes.

Hmm. I have a clown, a orchid dottyback and a 6 line. The clown, believe it or not, keeps everyone in check. The dottyback is the skittish one.

I mistakenly bought a diadema dottyback when I first started in the hobby. Total terror, it went straight back to the lfs. A little later I tried a springeri. He was a little better, didn't kill anything but was still a bit obnoxious. I re-homed him during an upgrade. I've heard fridmani, or orchid dottybacks (not purple, different fish) are more docile, but I personally won't try another.

It's up to you, but I'm not sure a time-out will make much of a difference...

I lost two fish also. The Dottyback was introduced to tank last.

I know... old thread, but my orchid dottyback is a model citizen

I think orchids (fridmani) are the exception where almost all specimens are peaceful. And then I think there are a handful other species that are often peaceful but sometimes not...and last are those like the diadema that are almost always a problem[emoji849]
