I am having a problem with my big monti colony. I’m wondering what could be growing on it. Does it look like cyano or dinos? It has been doing great for 6 months. I can’t tell if something is causing it to die off and this stuff is growing on it?

I had some cyano in the tank recently growing. I sucked it out. Did a 1/2-3/4 dose of chemiclean. I don’t see any coming back yet but this stuff is still overtaking my monti. I don’t see any dino looking issues in the tank elsewhere if that is it.

I know my nitrate is high, it has lately been spiking and I’m water changing to get it down. If that is the issue what
can I do about the coral?

1.025

8.0 ph

30 nitrate (Red Sea)

0.5 maybe? phosphate (salifert)

9.6 alk (salifert) (I dose am and pm by hand for the last 6 months with this coral, it has been pretty fine with that)

450 calcium (also hand dosed. I use b ionic)

1200 magnesium

Is it anywhere else in the tank?
Where is po4?
Mag is low, have you been having swings of alk or cal? Bump mag to 1350 min.

Can't really see anything in the video can you take photos?
I pulled these off the video. Can't tell but, chemiclean could be an invitation to Dino's.
OP, do they blow off easy? Go away at night and come back in the day?

I don’t notice it anywhere else. Po4 seems to be around .5 using salifert. I will bump mag, I’ve always had stable around this number and don’t dose it but I’ll get some to bring it up. Some light swings of alk, I’m still hand dosing 2x daily, but I have been for months

I was worried video would be compressed. I’ll get better pics up in the am

So I just did chemiclean yesterday afternoon. I don’t like dosing chemicals but with it being on the sand bed for a couple weeks now and then it suddenly appearing on the monti for the last few days, I figured I should, as an emergency precaution, use the chemiclean. The stuff on the monti looks a little reddish, but also a little brownish, so I can’t really tell what it is.

It blows off easy. I’m blowing it off at least daily with a turkey baster. It’s hard to tell at night but I’ll check in the morning before lights on. It’s like a light dusting, so it barely shows up, been trying to keep it blown off.
Thanks for the replies

Here’s some photos. What do you all think

the cyano in the sand is definitely not coming back. This is still here. It blows off easily. It was also present before I dosed a little chemiclean.

That has a reddish tint to it in the pics. could it be cyano?
How did you dose the chemiclean? Did you follow the directions?

Yes, the only thing I did is a lighter dose, probably 3/4 worth of the dose.
I’ve had it in the sand for a few weeks now and I suck it out weekly and it immediately comes back, this weekend when I dosed chemiclean it didn’t come back. No sign of it at all in the sand bed.
Could it be Dinos, even though I have elevated no3 and po4?

I think the coral is dying off for some reason, and something is taking hold. Thinking maybe it’s dying off from elevated no3? It is really high. I just did a 25% water change and will be doing more to bring it down.
