Big Problems

I didn't know how fast zoa pox can spread.. I always check my zoas in the morning before the lights come on and before they go off. One morning everything was fine, that afternoon my elec. went off. Well all the zoas closed for about 15 min, and when the lights kicked back on I saw it. Zoa zits on 15 of my frags. I'm freaking out right now!!! this is my third day of furan and going to let them sit for 4 to 7 days after this treatment. Does it make a huge diff. is the water is not that warm with the furan (says warm water works best)? Has anyone overcame this much infection? Any tips would help...thanks Ryan

increase flow or find out whats the stresser is most of the time when ive gotten it its ben on newly aqcuired frags after stress from shipping once put in a high flow area it goes away most of the time and has never spread to other colonys thats why im assuming that pox is only a byproduct of stress zoa/palys get kinda like a cold we can catch if we are stress and are imune system lowers.But high flow helps to heal them when conditions are good if these are all long time residents id check tank parameters as well make to make sure nothing else is causing it.

Oh a little FYI last time i got symtoms of pox was after a fresh water dip on some newly aquired frags some died but otherwise looked very healthy untill i dipped them.I was out of TMPCC so did this method and am assuming the dip caused the pox but most all healed nicely.

so you say that the freshwater dip caused them to get sick? well I have a week to see if they look better before I have to dip them in furan again. I have a seio 1500 and 2 max. 900 in a 55 so the flow is good. Did all my test and they were good. I did how ever dipped a new frag about a week ago that had a little fungs on it!!! I have another question. Why can't you dip your frags that have pox in saltwater with the furan. I know that FW kills pests and will help with the fungs, but you think that it would help with the stress of the frags to do it in a cup of your tank water. Is that a dumb idea? Or will the furan not work as good in saltwater?

I know that it is used in FW and SW because it is a treatment for fish. Now sense it is used for zoas not a fish, can it be as affective in saltwater as FW? If so, then we should be dipping it in SW for the treatment of pox because it would be less stressful to a already stressed out zoa. Or is the FW a added help for the pox itself, and not the added help to make the medicine work?

Ryno I used Saltwater and did extended length dips. Even my feather dusters survived the treatment. I would not sugest useing it in your tank and would recomend rinsing each piece off before re entering the tank. If you are useing one capsule per cup of water it will definetly stain the frag green but found this goes away. No this does not exactly answer your question about useing fresh water with the treatment but just letting you know what worked for me.

Allso I agree with reefboy in that no other colonies got pox in that tank. I had a rock slide on top of the rock and days later found they got the pox. With so many frags having the pox I would be looking for something that is causing them to generate pox in that tank.

thanks, I think my next dips will be with SW and the Furan. If you said that you tried this method and it worked, I can't see the harm in trying. I would guess this will be less stressful after I had did the RO dips before. And like you said you could do longer dips times with the SW. I will keep everyone posted on what happens. thanks for all the info

YEa use SW in the furan dips, I have done this 3 times now for zoas that show signs of pox, the link to zoaid.com, he says to use tank water in the dips. It really works I have not lost a single polyp to pox since I have been doing these dips. I have found I get the pox shortly after major temp changes, the other day my tank run up to 89 degrees and when it finally came back down to range 2 frags showed signs of pox so I dipped them and they look great now. I still have one more dip to go but the signs of pox is diminishing.....Furan 2 can be used in satwater as well and supposedly does not harm inverts and corals but I would still use it outside of the tank.

Instructions (as per the manufacture):
Use one capsule for every 10 gallons of aquarium water
Wait 24 hours and repeat dose
Wait another 24 hours and make a 25% water change
Repeat this treatment for a second time for a total of 4 doses of Furan-2
Make a final 25% water change and add fresh activated carbon
Repeat if necessary

Put the zoa in the Furan mix and leave it for xxx minutes. I recommend at least 15 min but not more than 30 min.
After the treatment, wash the zoas in your tank water on the other cup you had put aside. Then put the zoas back in the tank where there is a stronger flow.

I use 1 cup RO water buffered to match tank pH with 1 full packet of Furan-2 for 20 min. Has worked on every single fungus/bacteria i've encountered, and it has worked on all wild frags i've rec'd as well. I do 3 dips, 1 day apart and then leave in QT for 4 weeks with weekly 100% WCs. Has worked 100% every time.

guys, guys, I know the RO method of dipping frags with furan-2... I was asking if there was a difference between RO dipping and SW dipping. If there was none than it seems like the SW would be less stressful than RO (for zoa pox not fungus). But if dipping in RO water made the medicine work better, I was going to do that. That is what I was asking, and Azurel helped me out with that answer. I understand that RO water might help with the fungus portion of the furan2 but not in my case.....thanks everyone I hope you can understand what I was asking

Sorry for the mistake. I don't think it makes a difference what water the dip is, the medicine is designed for both FW and SW fish. My thinking is that since the bacteria/fungus is thriving on my zoas in SW, dipping them in the medicine and also RO water that it is not accustomed to can only help kill it off.

The zoas can handle the RO water, in the wild they sometimes spend hours in FW or out of the water all together.
