Hey guys. So first of all I dont really know if this is correct forum to post this in or not but I was thinking of opening up a shop and I'm interested if anyone here has any advice for where I can get quotes on getting aquarium setups like they have in pet shops? Any help or guidance would be appreciated, thank you!

I think most shops buy racks and then diy sumps and hook up 40-20 gallon tanks to the sump. My favorite shop just uses a 40 filled with tons of LR and a huge skimmer. There is only one baffle that keeps debris out of the return pump. Then they place 8 20 gallons on a 2 level generic looking stand. Then for lights they use cheap Home Depot light fixtures and t5s for the frag tanks.

You can use the search part of this forum

.... but I believe the majority of LFS owners on R2R are saying they are losing more and more money every year. Retail is dying

The online sales world with WYSIWYG pics is taking over.

My LFS always seems packed. That being said most are there for simple food or freshwater fish. Most of the corals have been there quite a while. As the business owner of a different field I'd have to agree with the above post. If I were to try and start an aquaculture business, online would be the way to go. Raising livestock can be done in the comfort of your own home and shipped from there also. With a commercial business you have insurance costs, building maintenance and all the bills that come with it. Owning a building zoned as commercial isn't cheap and has lots of things your local municipality would love to take your money for. On the other side if you can set something up on your own property and start a simple LLC or DBA then basically everything at your home becomes a tax write off.
