BigJim's 155 Tank Thread

how is everything doing now?

What are you dosing if anything?

Things are going well for the most part. I did a stupid thing a few weeks ago that caused some issues. I accidentally knocked the plug out of my protein skimmer collection cup and didn't notice it for almost a week. My sump was a disaster and nitrates went from 5 to 20. This tank always has issues when my nitrates increase, and I think it might be related to a nasty strain of cyano that pops up when nitrates rise. My Sunset Monti and Miami Hurricane Chalice always turn greyish and my PC Rainbow always shows some STN. I also have some spots of coralline algae that turn white. This is the third time I have let nitrates increase and saw the exact same issues. At least now I know to take quick action to avoid bigger issues.

I dose KZ Flatworm Stop and KZ Coral Booster. I do not have flatworms but it really seems to help with coral growth and polyp extension. Other than that, I do weekly water changes and use ESV B-Ionic two part to maintain alk and calcium.

lets get an update on your tank when you have time. your pictures are always great, hope everything is going great still!

I have been having some sps issues since early December. I fragged my bali shortcake, pink lemonade and forest fire digi due to STN. I lost my tierra del fuego, christmas mirabilis and ORA red planet. So I went from three almost identical red acros to none. Not all corals are doing bad, so here are some recent pictures.

This one is trying to have issues on me. You can see some mesenterial filaments near the top.

Great looking pictures! I think I need to sign up for a Flickr account to host my pictures like you do!

Thanks! I love Flickr. It's easy to use and easy to post the pictures here. I used Photobucket in the past but they just got worse and worse.

Thanks for the nod on Flickr! Keep doing what you're doing Jim. Tank is looking good!

I managed to get some photos of all my current tank residents. The foxface was sending a warning to the desjardini tang when I took the photo, so I was able to get a photo with his dorsal fin extended.

I am still dealing with SPS issues but I guess I am overdue to at least post some recent pictures.

I have been wanting a raja rampage for years, but was never able to find one at a price I liked until now. It's just a small frag and still on the frag rack.

I haven't posted a tank update in quite a while. I have not had SPS issues in more than 4 months, so hopefully the issue has been resolved. I am still not sure what caused the problem. I believe it was a bacterial infection, the DIY screen tops leeching something or my old skimmer leeching something. I replaced the skimmer, removed the tops and started dosing about every saltwater bacteria additive made to try to out compete bad bacteria. One of those things seemed to solve the problem.

Here are some fish pictures and a few of the new SPS that seem to be doing well. Hopefully it stays that way for a while.

You take some of the nicest pics!

Thanks! I just replaced my Nikon D7000 with a D7500. I can set the ISO higher without getting a lot of noise and it allows me to set the aperture lower. That has made a huge difference with fish pictures especially.
