Bio balls and blocks?

Do j need bio balls or blocks. Its my tank cycling. And i only have a sponge and sock in my sump. I have live rock and sand.
 
No you don't. Liverock is your best filter followed by a skimmer and then a refugium. Bio balls highly oxygenated environment often leads to a tank that is great at processing ammonia and nitrite but lacks the low oxygen zones needed to process nitrate and phosphate.
