Bio-Balls can't support denitrifying bacteria.

They don't produce anymore nitrates, but they can spew the ones that you have, back into the water column.

Scroll down to Randy's point #5 and read ;Bookworm real close. I've personally seen ;Wideyed it happen.

Both will grow bacteria on their surface. Ceramic material has a finer network on which bacteria will grow. But requires a prefilter so as to not get clogged with large matter.
Bacteria will only grow to the amount of waste ( food ) produced for it to consume. So one could have a ton of ceramic media but the bacteria will only be able to grow to the point where in runs out of food source and reaches a balance of food(waste) and bacteria population.

the bacteria feeds from the microscopical left overs of the food i give to the fish ?

i think i dont have enough rocks, is there a way to know for sure?

Detectable ammonia in an established tank would be an indication. :)

I know this thread is old, hopefully some one can help. I'm setting up a new nano tank with an AIO chamber in the back. Sera Siporax is known to leach silicate, marine pure gems and bio blocks leach aluminum, plastic bio-balls are supposed to be less effective. I don't know what to use. What would be the best bio media to place in the rear chamber basket? Thanks in advance ☺

What kind of tank is it? We have something interesting that may work for you.

I like eheim substrate pro.
If you want hdpe bio media look at K1 or K3 bio media.
Any plastic bio ball will also work.

None. That is what rock and sand is for.

Pm me your address. I will send you a few of these in the attached. We call them “forever floss “ and as the name suggests, it lasts forever. It is a great mechanical filter as well as a bio bed. When it gets clogged up, take them out and submerse in clean water and squeeze out most of the gunk. No need to completely clean because it is full of bacteria. Then put back in and off you go. The water will be cloudy for a few minutes and clear up quickly. This is why our single chamber aio frags do so well

Are these similar to IM’s fiber balls?
