Bio Balls

I'm just curious what people think of the use of bio balls and how they use them. Just water running over top of them or fill a chamber and have them submerged with high water flow ??

imo hydroton is a much superior bio filter, doesnt plug up as much and its cheaper to buy

I won't say they don't work for saltwater, but it's my opinion that bioballs are detritus traps that then turn into a nitrate factories, raising nitrates in your tank. Bioballs are great for freshwater, but not so good for salt. JMTC
