I'm somewhat new to the saltwater side of aquariums and I purchased a 29g biocube that has been setup and running for over 6 months now. I'm running about 28 lbs of live rock with live sand and a few corals as well. The only modification I have done to the tank is removing the bio balls and replaced them with live rock rubble. I want to upgrade the lighting on it but do not want to remove the hood. Are there such upgradeable lights that can be added to the tank for better light quality? And are there any other recommended modifications that I should do to the tank as well? As far as the filter, etc.? All feedback would be much appreciated!!!!

Biocube is great because there are tons of upgrades that you can do. I am about 4 months into mine right now.

Have you looked into inTank media basket/fuge? There is also the Tunze protein skimmer (as well as a couple others). The inTank products can both fit in the middle chamber. Media basket = filter floss / chemipure / purigen, while fuge just has cheat (and a light of some sort, either magnetic stick on the back or a submersible LED). I do not run a protein skimmer, but this is only because I started cheap with the Oceanic and was not pleased with the performance, was pulling wet and after a while I just stopped dealing with it.
What about upgrades to your flow output? I replaced the stock water pump with a Maxijet1200, and added a Koralia600 inside the display.
There are LED kits that can retrofit to the biocube hood, but these are pretty costly. I am currently decided wether I want to try and save money (this is impossible in this hobby right?) and get them a little down the road. I have even seem some people remove the hood and even the plastic rim on the biocube and hang LED kits from above.

Not a biocube but just picked up a 24 aquapod, are there any good upgrades for this tank

I just bought this AcanLighting led for my 14 gallon biocube and removed the hood. My temp is much more stable now. The hood was holding in way to much heat. I also removed the upper rim IMO it looks way better. Here is a pic with the new light and top rim removed. Also definitely check out in tank media baskets!

I've been wanting to get a BiCube just to play around with it. I've seen a lot of Nice ones here on R2R.

Duff man - DO IT!

Aquaman - browse around the forums for someone with the same tank, using the search feature. From there...steal their ideas!! Or "get inspired", whatever the case may be...point is someone has already probably done what you want to do with both successes and failures so you can learn from them

Hey Duff I thought about doing another tank for some super high end lps and zoas and scored one last night from F&Smith for $280 shipped with stand. It's the JBJ led 24 gallon. A steal IMO.
