I was wondering if anyone has had success using mainly biological filtration, and nothing else. No skimmer, chemical media or fuge. Just large quantities of seachem matrix, or some other bio media, and bacterial supplements. With my current nuvo 10. I am doing just that. I am using 250 ml of seachem matrix. Dosing the tank with microbacter clean every week after my 15% water change. The tank was cycled for a month, and a half with a entire bottle of bio spira. Then seachem stability was used. The idea is to attempt to get a diverse thriving amount of bacteria. Enough so that natural denitrification enhanced by supplementation, and corals. Will deal with the bioload. I may fill my bottom third chamber with n03 brightwell export media. That way the first chamber is seachem matrix aka ammonia/nitrtite. Third chamber nitrate/phos reduction. I do use filter floss, and it is changed out weekly. However the only real filtration I am using so far is biological in nature. The tank has been up for about 3 months. So far I have no algae, and or any other issues. Seems to be going well.

I have a similar set up in my Nuvo 10. I run the IM desktop UV sterilizer in the first chamber with two mechanical filter pads on top, second chamber is a bag of biomedia and last chamber is heater and return pump. No skimmer or chemical media but I do put a carbon filter pad between chamber 2 and 3. I haven't had any ammonia issues and I tend to feed pretty heavy. I just make sure to always do a water change and vacuum my gravel once a week.

Do you supplement bacteria? What do your nitrates look like? Corals? I am really curious.

If I remember to after a water change I will add a dash of Seachem seed but I probably haven't added any in over 2 months. My nitrates usually top out around 10. Got quite a bit of coral in there, zoas, micro lords, euphyllia, bowerbanki, stylophora, gorgonian, ricordea.
