Is there anything wrong with running a biopellet reactor without a sump? Also, is it best to run GFO/ Chemipure in conjunction with biopellets? I read somewhere that biopellets aren't as good at removing phosphates as they are removing nitrates which may cause a cyanobacteria outbreak.

You can run bio pellets without a sump. But just make sure enough flow is going thru the reactor to make them all tumble. It's best (and recommended) to run pellets with the outflow going to your skimmer. If you are running gfo/chemipure currently keep them running while you start off the pellets. It takes a good amount of time for them to get the bacteria to grow that will consume the nitrates. Most who run pellets eventually take gfo offline since it's mostly not needed.

If your going to go pellets. Start off with a small amount and slowly work your way up to the recommended amount for your system. But as you add more pellets keep testing to see how your levels look, you might not need as much.
