Biopellet without reactor

Hi guys,
Is anyone use biopellet without a reactor, just only in a mesh bag put it in the flow ? My tank cubic 40 has a little space for a reactor. Do biopellets need to be tumbled ?

I thought the stuff had to tumble slow as to “shed” the biofilm …. which is thence picked up by the skimmer…
