I talked to kevin gaines at biota and he said that their fish do not need to be qt. I really am not up for a tank transfer and know their fish are expensive but was wondering if you would take him at his word and buy a mandarin goby from them without qt. TIA Rich

If it's coming directly from Biota, then maybe. If it's being put in any other holding tank along the way, definitely not.

Is there anywhere on the website where he explains his QT protocol in detail? Even if it were thorough enough, it's a judgement call (on your part) whether or not it is being implemented correctly.

It is supposed to be the same as the fish they sell as there biota aquarium package where all the fish are disease free. Because the fish are aquacultured, it is not supposed to have any diseases as it has never been mixed with other fish.

Just because a fish is aquacultured doesn't mean it will always be disease free. Sometimes these fish go to trans-shippers and other middlemen (including your LFS) who will only be interested in the sale. If it gets put into a different holding tank, there's a very high likelihood that it will be on a system shared by many fish and could contaminate the clean fish with stuff like ich or velvet.

Just be very careful and make use your best judgement. You don't have to medicate the fish, but putting it in its own temporary holding/qt tank so you can observe it wouldn't hurt one bit.

thanks. ordering from their website gets the fish directly from them which is why they are so expensive. That is how they did their gofund it project for the biota aquariums.

I think I will keep them in a temporary holding tank like you said.

Let us know how they do for you. I am thinking of purchasing a pair when they become available, too.

Just to add my 2cents here. Never, ever trust anybody's QT but your own. Even if all you do is observe the fish for 30 days, that's better than trusting somebody else's QT outright.
