Biota yellow tang 5 month update

5 month later update. I have 3 of the 5 yellow tangs left after the queen angel killed 2 of them in a 55 gallon tang before they moved into the 240. They are as yellow as any wild caught one I've ever seen. 1 has a small amount of hlle, but I think it will probably heal with time.

They did not yellow up until I put in strong lighting, 3 to 4 weeks after that and they are bright yellow. I feed them small pellets 8 times a day in an auto feeder and seaweed daily.

Thanks for the update. This helps, as I am planning on getting one. What do you mean by strong lighting? Did you increase the intensity way up? I was not aware that light intensity played a role in fish coloration.

I was not either but it certainly happened in a matter of days under the new lights. I also think I read that somewhere but not sure where. I went from a crappy petco light in quarantine to reef lighting leds. Probably around 200 to 300 par but I don't have a meter. They are going to be pale yellow as very small juveniles either way until some point. Today they are as bright as any other yellow tang.

Same for me. In QT with a cheap amazon light the tang did not have much color at all. After moving it into the DT it colored up very quickly and didn't take long to win boss of the tank over my flame angel!

I have 2 Radion XR15 and 1 XR30 on my 100g 50" long and 19" deep tank, the intensity is set at 45%, I only have LPS and they seem happy, but my Foxface fish, although fat and happy barely shows any yellow. I wonder if increasing the intensity would help, but I am worried about bleaching the LPS. I have around 150 par at the bottom of the tank last I checked. Planning to get the yellow tang next week.

Should be plenty of light to color up your foxface, I would not increase the light if it risks hurting your coral.

I just got one last week. He eats well and is looking better already. Eats flakes and algae. Very happy w/him. Gotta get them straight from the source and avoid the $50 markup.

Question about quarantine for these guys... Did you feel you needed to make sure they were eating or were you concerned about disease? I just assumed since they are captive bread that there would not be risk of disease... Am I wrong?

Mine did not come with any parasites or disease, not to say that is impossible. Seems less likely with these captive bred ones straight from biota. If you get them from somewhere else like live aquaria, I would certainly assume they are infected to be safe. I didn't have too many issues getting them to eat. It is harder than a normal yellow tang because their mouths are so tiny.

thanks for responding. I am looking at ordering one direct from Biota initially for one of my smaller tanks (37G) and once large enough, moving over to my 120g.
