Last week we got a biota yellow tang from algae barn and it has been in qt to just observe it. It likes to play peekaboo as we say here when we go in and after about 5 minutes she comes out. Color came back nicely. No spots. Strong appetite.

would a week in an observation tank be sufficient or would you keep it in longer? I’m half tempted to place her in the display tank but I’m second guessing myself as I have fought ich in our freshwater one to many times than I’d like.

the observation tank is a 15 gallon.

Go at least 21 days. It is the cycle period for ich and most disease and assures nothing foreign is coming into your display tank

Post some pictures. There are several of us who are really interested in a biota yellow tang.
I will say it was posted at 1-1.5”. They shipped super fast. Came in at 3 inches. We are super happy with them! Feeding response is great! This is next to a 6 inch pvc pipe. This was also the second day we had her. She is much more colorful now.

Just wondering what type of food you started them on? I hear they eat pellet of flake food right away. Is that correct?

I had a biota yellow tang and fortunately or in my case unfortunately they eat anything you give them so be sure to get them liking nori on a clip before feeding the rest of the tank as they are super fast. I had to gift mine to a LFS as it was just too fast for some of the other inhabitants in the tank, not the best research initially on my part.

Per BIOTA's web page / yellow tang specifically:

These voracious herbivores do well when frequently fed a mixed diet of nori, frozen food blends, spirulina brine shrimp, Easy Reefs Masstick and appropriately sized DKI Pellets and C1 and C2 pellets.

Just feed him nori daily too to help color up. Everything I’ve gotten from Biota has been great. The fish in this tank are all captive bred from Biota and a little goby from ORA.

BIOTA is the bee's knees in this hobby right now. Matted filefish, sapphire damsels, and just recently a gold lined rabbitfish. Have to say I am biased but they really do an incredible job.

February will be trying their mini Acropora colony from Palau and their fancy blue tee!

This is great info for me. I have been shopping the BIOTA yellow tangs. Still on the fence.

Thanks for all the Info. Had my first delivered yesterday. Looks great so far. Will get on the Nori right away. It arrived super healthy appearing and seems to have taken well to my QT.

I just got my Biota Tang on the 11th of this month and she is doing great. A little shy at first, but only took a day to really start coming out and cruising the rocks. She eats everything from the small TDO pellets to frozen foods to flake with my clowns. Eating Nori as well!! She arrived with the heating pack still warm. Very pleased with my purchase!!

I go 4 weeks minimum with observational QT. Up to 6 weeks is even better. It's hard to wait sometimes though.

I kept mine for 4 weeks but that was because he was in pretty bad shape when I picked him up from a local petco for a discounted price.
Yeah they might look translucent/clear at the beginning but if you keep your tang well fed and happy they will thrive on their own.
Here’s a picture of mine when I picked them up and right up to his last day on the QT tank.
Should also mention I got an algae bloom from feeding this little guy 2-3 times per day but seeing him now makes it worth it.
