I ordered in a male green birds wrasse and heard from someone to not quarantine them because they don’t do too well in quarantine. What would you recommend for this species. I heard they are pretty ich resistant. Would it be ok to just get safety stop for dips? I’d rather put them in Dt but if it could prevent problems then I’ll do so.

@Slocke @i cant think @Tcook @Crabby48 may have advice on QT for wrasses. Maye @Fishfreak2009 as well?

I've read the wrasse-ich resistance thing as well but not sure the validity. Also no idea if that's more to do with actual resistance or asymptomatic carriage.

Unless he is the only fish in the DT and you don’t plan on putting anymore fish in in a while, he should go to at least his own tank separately for observation purpose and allow him peace and quiet to acclimate to captivity. You don’t need to use medicine if that’s your worry, but you should start learning meditation to prepare if and when there is a need.

I just pine through 2.5 weeks of prazi. Their slime coat gives them some resistance to ich but it can hide in the gills

another problem is I have no clue what size he’ll be so if he is a chungus I don’t know if he’ll be comfortable in a 10-20 gallon

Did they at least tell you small, medium, or large? I suspect a 20G Long would do. There is a thread by @Jay Hemdal on tank planer dimension required to keep fish. You should consult to that as well.

Follow the standard QT protocol. Use either copper power or copper safe as opposed to an ionic copper product.

Rid ich is a tonic and useless. They CAN be quarantined and theyre risk is worms and flukes and best start to quarantine is to use PraziPro and dose at 80% of recommended and apply initial dosage known as an interval for 8 days, do a water change and do one more 8 day dose interval
Use airstone with prazi as it does reduce both oxygen and appetite. If running a skimmer, leave cup off first 24 hrs as skimmer will go nuts from the glycol solution in Prazi
A deep bowl with sand is a must for this fish while in QT

Bird wrasses don’t need sand.

Large wrasse handle coppersafe well. Can’t say the same for Cupramine. That **** kills.

so wrasse are ok with copper? i heard different before
While they can tolerate copper, Chlotoquine phosphate safer to use and even General Cure which conyains a low level of metro and Prazi but they will be ok in Coppersafe NOT cupramine and at 2.1-2.25 therapuetic level

CP is only guaranteed to be effective if there is no biofilter.
I understand it's a matter of replacing a % of CP daily to account for biodegradation. Read from humblefish. No experience myself.

I recall seeing that too but I also recall that he also said the only way to know CP is for sure gonna be effective is in a zero bio filter environment.

I don't have personal experience with this , however I have read that when stressed the bird wrasse may burrow in sand even if they don't normally do so. So perhaps consider in a QT environment until the wrasse is comfortable with its surroundings.
