Ive done some messing around with some birdnest in my tank. One is at top, the very top of 120 watt LED, so far that at the top when there is a water change it comes out of the water. anyway it was bought very dark green and came from a more nutrient rich system (mine is like 0.001 phos) it gets alot of light and ok flow. the other similar in color, is at the bottom of a 240 watt led side shaded by a rock. the one shaded is neon green and bright. the one on the top at the 120 side is a very dull brown with no neon hardly. 240 side gets a straight one way flow and the birdnest are going with the flow and long branches. On the 120 side it gets less flow but more of a pounding flow. branches are compact and close together like you see in alot of SPS tanks. looks like more flow produces long branches going with the flow and more light produces more pigment in the the coral while less flow produces clumping and less light for the birdnest species produces duller color.
