Newish to reefing. Tank is about a year old. 2 weeks ago we splurged on a chili pepper chalice and a birds nest. Chili is doing ok, just ok. Birds nest, not looking so hot. Haven't seen polyps in maybe 3 days, algae growing on it. We have been struggling to keep up with hair algae. I guess I'm wondering if it's dead for sure or if it is just fighting to come back.

I'm sure you're going to ask what my parameters are, I dont know then at the moment, tested this morning and all were in the parameters outlined for mixed tank on redsea. PO4 and NO3 were not phenomenal (this algae), but right on the edge of acceptable.

This same thing happened to my Toad Stool it has been closed for a few months and it rarely sticks out it polyps. I'm not really sure why this happens to coral.

I would move the power head so it isn’t directly pointing at the coral. Make sure your light is strong (above average) and feed the tank with some Macrovore or something like that. See what happens for a few days and reasses.

A birds nest is not difficult to keep if your water parameters are stable. Lighting and flow are equally important in my opinion. Do you test for alkalinity and calcium? If you are going to put corals in your tank, you should have a method of keeping certain parameters stable. I have a few birds nest and they do like light and decent flow as well. Also, if algae is growing on it then it is dying. If it has some life, you may be able to cut the dead part of and try to bring it back but find a decent spot for it.
