Is it normal for the main stalk to turn white and or die from not getting light?

This is happening on both of my birdsnest colonies. Hard to get a good pic but you can kind of see the base in this picture which is white and looks like dead skeleton in person. Do these need to be pruned so this doesn't happen? It's been this way for a while now with the rest of the colony seemingly unaffected.

Thanks

I heard that this is pretty normal

Based on my experience, it is typical for bottom of the BN to died off due to lack of lights. But usually slowly and un-noticeable. If it turned white within a day, then it could be STN/RTN.

Thank you both. An yeah @flooddc it happened slowly as it grow and cut off light.
