Hello all. I have been building my mixed reef. I’ve had experience with lps but not sps. I have a birdsnest that is somewhat doing good. The way I have it mounted the bottom doesn’t get light and has died. However the portion that is getting the light is fuzzy and looks great. Do these have to be mounted completely upright like a bush or can they overhang? And can they regrow or the portion that is all white dead for good?

I believe they can hang off the side just fine. My little frag (a single stalk) I got was mounted on a small piece of rubble which was constantly being knocked over by crabs and dumped into my open brain. Brain won and the BN had some damage. Then the crabs knocked it off again this time towards the back of the tank and I figured it was just a goner. I was peeking into my rock work one day and lo....that sucker had landed on an outcropping sideways and was doing great with several new arms growing off it. I'm going to leave it there and let nature take its course. :)

The family pocilopodra(probably misspelled but includes seiratopora, Stylophora, pocilopra) are all rather more likely to polyp bailout than other sps. Areas that they expel will not regrow, but as tissue grows from other areas it can grow over the tissue-less areas.

Ime these love flow, mounting needs to take this in consideration. Any areas that are not getting a good flow will not thrive.

Light, aim for about 250-275 par ish. But when adding best to build up to this with a slow acclimation adding like 10% a week till there. Easiest way is a frag rack on the bottom slowly move up to eventual mounting height

I have quiet a lot of this, and it’s fine for a while but as the top grows up, the underneath becomes more and more shaded and eventually starts to struggle and die off. I just trim it every so often as it grows like a weed anyway.

I’ve fragged it so many times I have it all over to the point I’m going to be selling it back to the LFS shortly as large frags!

Ok. Because as you can see the top is doing great especially since I added another grye xf 250. I didn’t know if I should trim or if it regrows.

By chance seen anything eating it? Do you track alkalinity by chance any spikes?

That's a poci and I would cut off all the dead branches because they will just fill with algae and detritus, inviting other stuff to eat the algae and live in it.
