What would you buy? I see that the BK gen 2 models are far superior but how does the gen 1 compare to the new reef octo xp-2000?

Price not being a factor.

Price would play a factor in this comparison.... If there both the same price like a used 200 vs a new xp2000 I would take the bk, but if you were to spend 300$ or more to get the bk i would go the other route... Bubble blasters are great pumps but askolls are the best in the business IMHO.... What size tank you putting it on?

How about this.... i can get a new xp2000 for 400 bucks.... or i can get a slightly used BKM 200 with red dragon pump, without the new venturi, for 450...... its going on a 125 with a custom 40G sump.

i would go with the bk personally..... they might even be upgradeable to the gen2 here in the near future.... or might even be already lol....
just my 2... upgraded it would be overkill on your tank thou... either skimmer is gonna perform great on your tank but re-sell value etc. would make me buy the bk....

I like what i hear about the silent operation of the red dragon pump, and something about having a BK and knowing the contstruction quality is making me lean that way. The only question is how much of a skimmer is about the LPH scfh etc....

Any other opinions from those out there that are running a BK gen one?

the gen 1 bk is a little under powered. that is why they bumped it up from 1000 lph on the gen 1 to 1700 lph on the gen 2. all other dimensions the same. The only gen 1 with no change is the 160. 600 lph to 600 lph. only the air silencer moved.

How deep is your sump water? that would make me lean one way or the other. is it greater than 7 inches? then I might lean towards the bk. if it is around 6 inches I would go xp 2000. they pull around 1200 lph and are a great fit.

Sump level is 7.5 inches. Are they close enough where its worth buying a new octo and getting the 3 year warranty?

The only gen 1 bk mini I would buy is the 160. I have had both the gen 1 160, and gen 2 160 and both the gen 1 180 and gen 2 180. Along with the SRO 2000 skimmer. Gen 1 and 2 bk mini 160 are great. Gen 2 180 and 200's are great. sro 2000 is great. Gen 1 180 and 200 are just ok. No matter what level you run them at. You will have to run them a tad deeper than the gen 2's . They are quiet. But you will be running 700 lph less air than the gen 2 counterpart with the same neck and body size. Not a bad skimmer but the volutes and venturis on the gen 2 180 and 200 mini's make the skimmer what it is. I speak from hands on experience. Not just what I have read somewhere.

Good luck

so the sro2000 is the better skimmer, and cheaper.... with a warranty..... is that what i am hearing? Just want to make the right decision.... and not make a costly mistake.

I would pick it over the gen 1 200 but not over the gen 2.
For your setup I would get a bk mini 160, SRO 2000 int or XP, ATB 840 v2

I have the bk 160 Gen1 on my 95 display and 25g sump and love it, even had it on a 40g breeder and loved it. I also love the fact that if a meteorite was to hit NJ i could jump inside and be safe this thing is build like a tank.

only concern i have is that i only have the great deal on the mini 200 gen 1 which the pump isnt sized appropriately for the body is what i am hearing. The BK's look amazing, but i cant drop 900+ on one. I am thinking of going with the SRO-3000 at this point but dont know if it will be overkill.... i am dosing vodka so want a nice sized skimmer, plus i may be upgrading to a 180 at some point down the road.... and it seems that there is no conversion from gen1 to gen2. I really wanted the BK too :( amazed that BK would have miscalculated the pump size on these. I would be ****** if i bought a Gen one only to find out it wasnt up to their standards.

I have used the gen 1 and its not as nice as the gen 2 but it does pull around 1500lph air and it works just fine. I would be confident with it or the xp3000 on a 180g tank. I like the xp3000 design better but like the bk's pump better : )

Go with the BK. If you come to find that you don't like it you should be able to get what you paid for it.

Tough to argue with hands on experience....

the price of replacement parts on bubblekings is what makes me not buy them-- also there arent always in stock)
