I see a lot of tanks with the back of it black is this a good idea or just a preference .

I know in my previous tanks I have not had anything and you could see all the wires/wall and it was just not attractive. I'll be going black wall on this tank. Mostly personal preference.

It helps hide plumbing, wiring, etc. But if you get creative in hiding that stuff behind rockwork, black overflow boxes, etc I personally like the look of the clear back. As a bonus not blacking out the back allows for more light to reflect off of the tank walls. Either way works it really is just preference though.

Awesome think I will stay clear for now then getting ready for my first set of cleaners going in today . Tank been running for 5 weeks and numbers r right were they should be . So excited lol

I've always preferred either a black back or a blue one over a clear back.
Nothing takes away from the look of a reef tank more than being able to see everything behind the tank. Wires, plumbing, salt creep on the back of the tank, etc.
My newest tank has a black background.

I like a black or blue background to hide wires and equipment. I'm partial to black because most power heads and HOB equipment is black so they are less noticeable.

As others said, it is strictly for appearance. I prefer a painted blue background since it reminds me of the ocean. The black reminds me of a cave lol. Any dark color would work...hides equipment and makes the fish and coral stand out. Regardless, when you get enough live rock and coral, you barely see the background anyways.

Mine is painted marine blue.

I've always liked black backgrounds as it appears to make the color of the corals pop a bit more.

My nano has a clear back and I can see the wires. It is very distracting.

I used the black window tint (Gila) from Home Depot. It is not permanent (kind of like Colorforms) and not real expensive. Doesn't have nasty adhesive. I couldn't bring myself to paint a brand new tank.

Another benefit: Mine is built into a wall - you can see through from the back but not from the front.

I tinted my 125 black but am strongly considering painting my new 300 DD a blue color to lighten up the tank. I'm wondering if the Blue will reflect the light a Lil better?? Seems to me that the Black just soaks the light up.

I painted mine a dark purply/bluey colour. It still looks natural like a regular blue would and being so dark the bright colours in the tank contrast well with it :)
