I have a 40g half moon that is 27” deep
I’m running a 165W bb with lenses removed at 100% blue and just enough white to make water clear look. Would me having the light hanging 12” about water line be to high with the lenses pulled. I really love the color at 12” but want my corals to grow food. I have bubble tip anemones, mushrooms, Kenya trees, toadstools, and a little more. I just pulled the lenses a few days ago and had the light about 2-3” off the waterline corals seemed ok but don’t want to bleach them.

Any help

Picture of the tank would help. I have all my lenses pulled on my modded Mars boxes at 12" off water line. Around 80% blues and 30% whites. Tank is 21" deep.

I would say if on your tank if your intensity is at 100% at 2"-3" off waterline, the intensity may be too high. Lenses removed do reduce PAR, but without a PAR meter it's a guessing game. Without a way to test PAR, I would reduce the intensity to 50% to start and adjust it up a little in a week and observe how the corals are doing.

Probably depends on the LEDs. Some chips have very wide spread that needs to be narrowed/focused and some are like lasers that need to be spread/dissipated with a lens. From your pics I'd say you have the wide spread type so should be okay without lenses although there is a lot of light spilling out of tank. As another option you might be able to replace the original lenses with some that have a wider angle (I just ordered some 120* lenses to replace some of the original 90* lenses).

Do you think 12” will be fine I have a few nems close to bottom of the tank to. That have closed up. Since taking lenses off think they just need time to adjust. And do I need much white at all or does white even matter

It should be fine at 12". Just lower your intensity a bit.

White light isn't always needed, it's more for our viewing pleasure. Lol

Jokes aside, it's a small part of the "full spectrum" needed.

Do you think at 12” with lenses pulled my green Birdsnest will grow about 10-12” in the water

Is that a nano tank? Not sure how long those tangs will survive that. As for your question, No one can answer it only a PAR meter can.
