maybe black ich? i cant really see what you are trying to figure out, maybe circle the black dot? i could be really wrong though. i am not an expert, i am sure an expert will tell you what it is.

Doesnt look like black ich, the spot is too large. Looks like a couple of missing scales and so those little areas are discolored honestly.

oh ok. that is good to know. as i said, i cant tell where it is so i was just going off of the thread title

I believe its hyper melanization, clowns get it from stings from anemones, i had a rbt anemone a week ago-I believe he got stung by it twice, the rbt is dumped now i thought it was dead since it was outside the powerhead, now idk if it can grow in size as it has maybe from stress of a new tank and tank mate-a 4" sailfin in a 60 gallon tank

One at the LFS in the 4-5inch range has a dark spot on the right side (anatomical) in the exact same spot. That is why I am following.

Is there a frogspawn or anemone in the tank?
What about before? It decreases/increases in size with my niger, i believe good water quality/food will get rid of it, theres no meds as it is a condition not an illness

It is in a tank with a couple more fish...that's it. Wondering if it is common with Niger...I have only noticed it the past couple of weeks. I live 1 mile away so have been making several trips while setting up my new tank. I have been eye balling the fish to buy it because it has been in the shop for months supposedly. The fish looks unscathed and relatively healthy, eating like a pig...besides being in a small LFS box lol.

Yea nigers are pretty hardy, mine is docile however my picasso is the oppposite and theyre both at the same level of aggression, if its 100% healthy/good water parameters it should eat from your hand, mine didnt until the water quality went to above acceptable, I was using a malfunctioning ammonia test kit, it could be black ich as well, post a pic

Hope he's okay and doing well.
He is both, atm the dots are still there but from my understanding is that its hyper melanization is a condition not a disease and goes away with proper nutrition and good water parameters, rn theres a 4" sailfin tang bugging him but he'll go back in my 125 in a few days(the sailfin tang) and the triggerfish should then heal 100% he has received nicks from it but healed within hours, dont worry he'll be safe
