Hey everyone! I hope you all are doing well. I am looking for the perfect eel species for a new tank setup that I am planning. I have been doing a ton of research and the eel that I really am interested in is the Black Edge Moray Eel. Does anybody have experience with these eels?

I have prior experience with eels and am looking to have it in a tank completely on its own due to its aggressive behavior. What size aquarium would be best for this guy? I was looking to purchase a 75 or 90 gallon tank.

Excellent, since he'll be alone I think the black edge will be fine in a 4' tank, it would be hard to justify the expense of a 6' for a single species tank. The only consideration is these guys do seem to open swim a bit more than some of the other comparable small fang tooths. These guys definitely don't play nice so a solo tank is the perfect choice. The choice between the 75 and 90 is your choice of visual height, they are the same footprint, and the eel doesn't need the height. I like the height of the 90g.

Thanks for your reply! I am really excited to have one of these guys! I had a Snowflake Eel and a Golden Dwarf Moray a couple years ago in a community tank, however, the different needs of all of the different fish became very expensive and I eventually moved so I found the animals new homes.

That's why I want a more aggressive, larger species that way I can focus solely on that animal alone. Besides it's aggression, do you have any other advice or tips for this animal? Also, is there a particular tank you would recommend?

Tank brandbis your choice, a built in overflow is best for a couple of reasons. You must secure the top like fort knox, this guy can push right through lids. You need clamps, weights, gorilla tape, whatever your choice, no cracks whatsoever. Cover the overflow with a a piece of acrylic or plastic, with a couple drops of superglue. The reef ready tank will make it easier to secure the top and a sump will provide more and more aethetic filtering options. I have an Aqueon reef ready 90g.
