black fuzz growing on a "cure" live rock?

Just started cycling my new 30 gallon tank a week ago, the rock i first purchased has black fuzz on it while the other still has a white fuzz on it.

any idea what it is?

Not sure if I could help you ( I'm fairly new to the hobby), but it would help if you provided a picture.

Hmmm....not really sure what that is. From that picture, it looks more like black coralline algae than "fuzz", but as far as I know coralline algae does not come in that color. I will keep looking, but in the meantime keep an eye on it.

If you shine a flashlight on it does it seem a different color other than just black?

I'm guessing maybe it's just dark, dark green or red?

That does look cark green to me. (Any chance of a zoomed in pic?)

Anyone else think maybe #chrysophytes (or similar) with a dark #cyano population in residence?

There is actually a SPECK of bright green if you look closely

Is it just in that one patch/one rock?

It's also possible that it was something dying off that either A) is still dying off or B) is now recovering.

If you want to nuke it, take those rocks out of the tank and "paint" those patches with hydrogen peroxide.

Rinse and place them back in the tank.

Technically doing nothing is actually best at this stage of the tank's history....so maybe just wait and see what this stuff does.

Choose treatment if it looks like it will spread. Otherwise, maybe it'll pass in the normal cycling of the tank.

Looks like it's just this one rock, my tank has been cycling only a week...put 3 new rocks in and got two hitchhikers , a bristle worm, and a snail

But I have another rock that looks questionable, then again I'm super new at this

So you guys are a big help

If there's any question in your gut at all, then it's almost always a good idea to wait at this stage on just about anything.

I assume this is newish tank.. you will have all kinda stuff grow.. and then just poof be gone.. I had sponges out the kazoo for about 4 weeks.. then poof.. gone.. I would just wait it out..

Yes very new tank! Week old... only live rock and I'm excited and learning seeing the stages for sure...got two cool hitchhikers that's about it so far lol

It is amazing the life that will grow... and it is that part that I love.. new life from a dead "to the naked eye" tank.
