I purchased a yellow tang 4 days ago and discovered he had black ich yesterday. He's in my 29g qt tank but my problem is the qt i set up was only going to be for treating fish with prazipro. I have sand in the tank and some liverock. I planned on giving the tang a formalin bath tomorrow after work but will it be useless since my qt has sand in it. I dosed prazi in the tank last night. The tang went from not eating yesterday to eating after the prazi was put in the tank last night. Thanks

prazi is used to treat black ich so you are in luck. The formalin bath is only needed for prazi resistant strains

Why is it a problem? If it is truly black ich then prazipro is the correct treatment for it. :)

I thought maybe the prazi couldnt kill the eggs or whatever if they went in the sand and my tang would catch it again.

Ahhh. Well the good news is, you are doing the right treatment. The better news is that the second dose of prazi 5-7 days after this first one will kill any newly hatched babies before they can lay their own eggs. So, the best news is that you are correct again that prazi doesn't kill the eggs, but that's why there are two rounds of treatment.

That's a relief. Thanks! I just had to be 100% sure this was gonna get rid of it.

You got it. Anytime :)
Sorry got another question. Currently giving the tang the formalin bath and its at the 30min mark. Should the formalin be making the black ich drop off? I kinda got sand in the container when catching the tang so hard to tell if any have dropped off. I still see many on him.

Some may fall off, they’re really a kind of fluke. Many can remain embedded and “safe enough” during a bath.

I have another 1g formalin bath packet to use if needed. Should i do the 2nd prazi dose in 5-7 days from when i first dosed and a 2nd formalin bath if needed in 7 days?

Update: The black ich seems to be gone but it looks like now i have regular ich. I saw 2 spots on my carpenters wrasse and th next night the yellow tang seemed to have a decent amount. Should i do a water change/use carbon and then dose copper slowly over a couple days? Was also wondering if i should do the 2nd dose of prazi to finish off any black ich left in the tank.
