Im just honestly curious about these fish. What makes them so expensive, why are they so sought after, and what makes them so desirable over less expansive tangs???

It mainly has to do with how many of the fish are available to be collected. So if there are less of them then less are collected. It also has to do with sustainability and how many are allowed to be collected each year. I remember when yellow tangs were 50 to 60 bucks and gem tangs were $3,500.00. Now yellows go for like 250 to 350 and gems can be found for under 400 as well.

Nothing particularly special about it … other than there don’t seem to be many collected. I have one in my tank and it’s fine.

They have 2 large ones at a lfs for $700 each. They are nice and black not the ugly to me grey that I see in many images. Last ones they had were $1500 both sold. Not sure if they sold for the asking price. The new ones are larger than expected so I think the owner wants to move them because he has trouble selling large fish. In person I think they look ok but probably not a tang I would add to the gang. I prefer more color.
