Hi Everyone,

I noticed this mark on my clownfish about 4 weeks ago. He seems fine and is eating well. I assumed it would go away on its own but it hasn't. Other fish in tank are all fine including a regal tang. Can anyone throw any light on what it could be?

Thanks in advance,

John

It’s a bit larger than typical, but clowns develop areas of melanin where they get stung by a coral or anemone. Those type of marks are superficial and go away without treatment. However, does this spot have any depth to it, like the skin has eroded? If so, it may be an infection.

Hi Jay,

Thanks for getting back to me. I have put a couple of SPS in the tank now but when the mark appeared in was a FOWLR setup. There doesn't appear to be any breakage of the skin or sign of infection. Just watching them now and saw the tang have a go at him. I'm thinking it's about the same size as the tangs' mouth. They've been in the same tank together for years so don't see why they should have a problem with each other now?

Could be a tag mark from the tang. Fish aggression is a tricky thing: compatibility can change over time,!and of course, while you’re watching the fish, they are watching you and tend to play nice until you leave.
