I want to add one more tang to my tank and don't know which one. I am a die hard LSU fan so I think the purple tang is pretty cool but I've always wanted a black tang. Which one should I get????

I've learned a long time ago that you should always get what you want first. Cuase you'll end up getting it anyways. Or you'll keep dreaming about it and always wonder "what if" or "I should have"

Love my purple. Wouldn't trade him for the world. His name is "Lucky" because he was the first new fish I added to my tank after an ich outbreak long ago.

Too much hype on a black tang and over priced. A purple tang blows a black tang away for looks in my mind.

I bought a Black Tang last fall (he was the size of a silver dollar) and to this day, he's my favorite fish. Purple Tangs are awesome (not to mention a little cheaper on the wallet), but if you've got your heart set on the Zebrasoma rostratum, go for it! Below is a picture of my tang (cell phone pic, but a pic never the less). Good luck on your search!

I'd rather have a purple tang over a black any day of the week and twice on Sundays. BUT like I mentioned above... get what you want so you don't regret later.

The only problem I'm having is that I really want both but I know I can't because they would not get along. So really I want both equally. I have a blue tang and a cheveron tang right now and they are great. I just want one of those two and really can't decide. The black tang I could get right now is 3-3.5" and the purple is about 4". Man I have no clue though to which one to get.

If you want them equally, then the purple wins out on price!

Both are very nice additions, and in my experience, both are relatively mild mannered (for tangs). I have a puple tang and a black trigger at the moment, and I find the purple/yellow catches the eye a lot more than the black.

If you introduce both at the same time with lights off for the nex 1-2 days, there might be a chance that they will get along. I would worry more about your exsiting tangs in your tank. how big are your chevron and blue tangs and how big is your tank? are you sure you can house 3 tangs?

My cheveron is still in the juvenille faze and the blue tang is 4". LOL yea I'm sure I can house 3 tangs.

saltwater tank are about color to me, if you want a black fish go freshwater? the only reason people like them is becouse they cost a small fortune!

My purple is by far my favorite fish, I will never have a tank too small to have one in the future.

Black all the way. I'd really like an entire tank devoted to black or black/white fish. Black Tang, B&W Clowns, probably not domino damsels but stuff like that. How big is your tank, you laughed when someone asked lol, I'm thinking big. If you've got the $$ go with the black tang, not even a question. The purple is what I'd "settle" for, and nobody likes to settle.

Oh and GO GATORS!
Sent from my dorm @ UF :xd:

Yea that would be a pretty cool tank. I laughed because because I was just talking to someone about the "tang police" 5min. before that statement. Color is something that my tank is not lacking, alot of colorful sps, so it wouldn't be that big of a deal to have a black tang. O by the way it may be a old picture or not but when I saw it on my local reef club I thought it was funny so I have to share.

I have a purple tang and get a lot of compliments from guest about it's color. A black tang is just black where a purple tang will bring a little more color to the tank. Either way though, those are 2 great fish.

Get the purple, then spend the other $200-$300 on the ticket from the Tang Police. I love that pic.

I was shocked when I originally saw that the voting heavily favored the purple tang. Checking back later I am...glad?...to see that things have changed.

I love the black tang, and want one for myself, but under a few circumstances only.

- It would have to be a small fish < 3"
- It would have to be cheaper than $400
- I would have to feel good about the sustainability of the harvest of a fish that only comes from one island in the pacific.

If all three of those were met I would get a black tang. And I would love him to death.
