Somebody probably makes them, seems like there are tons of folks making frag plugs now. But I sympathize with not quite being satisfied with what's out there. I have a ceramic kiln and have started to make my own frag plugs / plates. If you don't ever find any let me know and maybe I'll whip some out next time I make a batch.

What type of clay do you use?

After it's fired, should we cure it?

Either a stoneware or porcelain clay that fires white in color, as those will typically have the least impurities and cleanest raw materials. Gonna try pure kaolin too. There is no reason to cure them that I am aware of.

I'm going to make a bunch of square plates and fill my bare bottom tank up.

Plan is to make a field of zoas. Remove when I need to frag etc.

How thick should I make the plates? Should I consider the potential shrinkage during the firing?

Probably target ~10% shrinkage and fire accordingly. If you fire frag plugs to full density, the stem cannot be broken off with anything short of Herculean effort. Same with plates if you ever need to cut or break them. When I made plates I went about 1/8 to 3/16 inch thick, seemed to work. The coral doesn’t care.

I actually made a bunch of neat stuff including aquascape pieces. Kilns broke right now though
