I love mine. I got it used, but I think it is the black live sand you see in some LFS. It's black and off-white pieces mixed, but looks charcoal gray under reef lights. It looks so natural. It looks awesome under the bright lights in my 30g frag tank.
I tried it; it just wasnt for me, also where it comes from it has magnetic properties and my pirahna float became a scratch hazard. Less intense magnets might fair better
I have seen some real nice tanks with it that has changed my mind about the look. When it comes time for me to set up a nano I am planning on using black sand.
Mine is not the black and white mix, but a product offered by SeaChem, called Gray Coast. It actually calcite, not the ferrous stuff that sticks to a magnet.
I have the carib sea black tahitian moon sand and love love love it
with the leds you dont get so much I guess ill call it color washing in the tank, and it really makes sand bed frags pop since there sitting black not white
Only downside is no buffering properties with it
thanks for the info peeps. I don't use a mag float. I use Mr Clean Magic eraser for inside, and coffee filters for outside. I like the way it looks and decided to go with the black.
The black sand is sharp. Kinda makes me wonder if I would have bought the 80lbs of white sand earlier this morning for my 120g if I had seen this post first.
