black silicone for joining acrylic to glass?

Hey Folks,
I saw a post somewhere that mentioned that using black silicone to join acrylic to glass works better than the regular clear silicone.

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this? If it is true, is there a particular brand or type of black silicone to use to join acrylic and glass? Is there a better item to use besides silicone (black or clear)?

I'm talking about a situation like building a sump using a glass tank and acrylic baffles.

It really wont matter which you use when doing baffles IMO as long as you do both sides so it will lock it in like a sandwich and it wont move. Ive made a few that way without any issues

your not suppose to use silicon to bond glass to acrylic it doesnt hold up good. i would find a local glass shop and have them cut some for you. i believe home depot will cut 3/16 glass cheap but if they are large baffles i would use thicker glass.

I have done a ton of sumps with acrylic, You just need to keep in mind that you will have to pile on the silicone AND MOST IMPORTANT you have to make sure you are not holding a lot of weight on the walls themselves. I make sure there is never more then 3 inches of water from one chamber to the other.

I will say it is correct that it does NOT bond well, however this does not need to be water tight since its in a sump. Now I would never use acrylic and glass together for anything that needed to be water tight.

This is what I read but they do have it posted the other way also. In the case its a acrylic tank I would use acrylic baffles and glue them with acrylic glue

Try using a decent neutral cure silicone like Dow Corning 795 or GE 1200 series, they have been the best for me. And clean the acrylic with denatured alcohol prior to applying.
and dont rough up the acrylic..use the shiny surface it will adhere just fine....
