Black slime bacteria or invert?

Any Idea what this is? I've been growing it on a frag plug for about 2 years. Leftover from a mushroom colony that migrated off. Some kind of invert or bacteria colony.... Check out the vent tubes.

Appears to be a black tunicate.

Also can be sponge (usually the black one is bad, because it can damage the corals it's near and to become invasive.
 
Black tunicate seems correct... Does anyone have first hand experience with these guys? I'd like to grow it out, as it's quite interesting, and must be serving a purpose with filtration....

Checking wikipedia, there are different types. Some spread by releasing larvae to colonize distant areas... but some appear to be landlocked.

Hoping someone can chime in with their experience with these, and what to expect.
