black sludge on frag plug

so I was at Petco getting a dogbone and walked by the saltwater tanks. they had a number of very good sized mushrooms and other softies but the sand under them has a black sludge and sometimes its even on the frag plugs. I am thinking about getting getting one but is this an algae or something else? if algae i have heard i can do a peroxide dip but how is this done? if not alae what is it and what can be done?

Take a picture next time to help us identify, black sludge can be cyano,Dino, even sponges

I agree it does, cyano can carpet your sand when left untreated

cyano and dino are all variations of algea arent they? so can they be killed with the peroxide dip i was told about?

I will get a picture tonight and if it can be fixed I will purchase tomorrow.

I’ve heard reefers spraying h202 directly on the algae using a syringe, then scrubbing of the dead algae with a brush. I’m not sure if this works on our type of dinos, they are a different breed of algae in our reefs, they’re considered bacteria. Tho there are many species that are considered algae.

When I was there three days ago the tree looking one on the left looked much better but already succumbing to the petco poor conditions but that was the one that I was looking at. Any idea what that black stuff is?

Cyano shows up when the tank parameters are out of balance. I would not dip for algae but you very much can to be safe. I would just blow it off with a Turkey baster in one bowl of water, then transfer to another and brush off any visible pest or left over algae, then dip for coral pest with your choice of coral dip solution (I use bayer)

Okay sounds like a plan to me. I use Coral RX for my dip but will scrub all that junk off before putting it in the display. see if I can save that Kenya tree the slow death it is destined for at Petco
