Black sponge killing GSP?

These GSP have been growing on this conch shell for the past several years. A couple weeks ago I noticed this spot where the polyps looked liked they were getting nipped by fish. Then this black sponge like growth started to appear.

Yes remove sponge from GSP, it will slowly choke it out and kill it
