I recently purchased a black storm clownfish to hopefully pair with one I have. The last one I had paired nicely with the one I have but died about 4 months ago. Fast forward, the last few days the obvious male is chasing and terrorizing the other to the point of exhaustion. Do I have 2 males? Will one change sex? I almost feel like taking one out as I don’t know if one will be killed! Any suggestions?

Sadly I have no suggestions to your current situation unless you can catch one of them and place in an isolation box. Did you introduce it in a box or did you add it directly to the tank?

As for "last time" ; I reckon you were lucky last time! Introducing clown fish in to a tank with an established specimen already can be somewhat of a gamble. As for the black storm ones; they're wee ******s!

When you say 'obvious' male do you mean a larger or smaller clown? How large are both clownfish? Was the one that survived your previous pair the larger or smaller of that pairing?

When getting a new clown to try and pair, you want to typically get a smaller clown because it has less of a chance of having already transitioned into female as all juvenile clowns are male. Even if the female (larger) clown of the previous pair is the one that died, the chances are that the male (smaller) will still claim its territory against a newcomer and, if accepted, will likely become the new female.

They seem to be close in size, but one is extremely dominant. Hopefully it works out I

This may not be possible but ,you could try catching all of the clowns move your scape around and reintroduce all at the same time.Just started my 132 gallon from two smaller tanks that had two clowns in each and it has worked out so far,no aggression no fighting 4 happy clowns in a tank.

They will fight until they figure out who is going to change to female… watch and you might need to separate and then re introduce. Thats why most people get two with very clear size difference
