Hey all. Just picked up my first coral yesterday. today I noticed a black string coming from the mouth. Any ideas what it is? Thanks in advance!

It looks like it's evacuating, ie... going to the bathroom. They do this regularly. Coral's also expel zooxanthellae this way as well sometimes.

Ahh ok. Thank you! I was worried something was wrong

I see two mouths in that picture. Looks like it will split and you will have two in a little while

Yes, perhaps?
OP, you mentioned this is your first coral. Are you measuring NO3 & PO4 in this tank? Do you have fish in the tank?

ALSO< WELCOME TO REEF@REEF! (I noticed you are new here!)

As mentioned earlier, this appears to be expelling. Mushrooms seem to do best (ime) in tanks that have plenty of nutrients. Also, I am wondering how much light the coral is experiencing (hours/PAR) as corals that expel zooxanthella sometime do so because they are not happy with the light (too much).

I don't really know your situation. The coral does look healthy and probably is just removing waste. Keep an eye out. If it splits and starts multiplying then I'm just worrying over nothing, ( I do this a lot.)
How long has it been in your tank?

Thanks for joining us. You will find lots of good information here and great folks to help when you ask.

Ok, enough of my worrying. Keep us posted. When it divides and there are extra I hope you'll remember me :)

Thanks! I have not measured phosphates in the tank yet but I am measuring nitrates everyday, currently between 5 and 10ppm. Tank has been running for a little under 2 months, it’s a IM Nuvo 10 so I’m doing pretty frequent water changes ( 2 20% a week) to try to keep everything as stable as possible. I’m running an AI Prime with a slightly modified saxby schedule at 30-40% I have 2 Davinci clowns In the tank. The coral was just added yesterday so I am now running the light at a daily 8 hour cycle.

Nice coralline.
I have a bunch of rics and have not seen this.
MAybe they poop at night when I'm not looking.
Or he's adjusting to your tank.
Lights sound good. Give him some time. He looks good, they are very tolerant.
Only problems Ive had with them are from close anemones.

I wish it was coralline! Haha. The whole scape is Life Rock rubble pieces glued together so it’s just purple colored rock.
Yea that’s why I went with this as a first coral because I’ve read they are pretty hardy.

If you've never seen it, look for almost a ruffle appearance on the edge near the mouths. Some I've had take days, some overnight to split. Congrats! Twins!
Oh wow! Didn’t realize it can happen that fast! I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on it and I’ll post when it splits.
