et rid of it any help would be appreciative thank you.

Looks like cyano to me.

Is that an area that doesn't get much flow by chance? For me, water changes helped get rid of it.

Definitely cyano, keep up water changes, watch the amount you feed and reduce your light cycle a tad then it will be gone in no time.

siphon your sand bed with a gravel cleaner. i pretty sure that is hydrogen sulfide. how long has your tank been running.

+1 Hydrogen Sulfide, it can kill your fish in high concentrations, take a sample and smell it. if it smells like roten egg thats what it is.

Another this is that your lights are on for 12 hours. Cut back a few hours slowly and it should help. How old are your bulbs?

I'm thinking a bit of cyano...if you had hydrogen sulphide producing bacteria, the black precipitates (iron) would be under the sand not typically on top, (but if you smell sulphur - that would be a bad thing as it means your tank is very low on dissolved O2.) Siphon out the bit you have add another source of flow and reduce the light cycle...tell us a little more about the tank - how old, whats in it and how many gallons - skimmer? filter? etc.

Yeah I agree, with out more info it is hard to tell for sure. From the pics it looks black but it could be cyano. Siphoning it would get rid of it but want fix the problem. Need more info.

Tank has been cycled sense Feb. 45 Gal. long with just my power heads it 1250gph not sure how much more my filter and red sea skimmer add. lights are t8 10000 k one 18in on each side i recently turned them off and covered my tank for 2 days and it went a way now its coming back!!! lol gonna lower my lights to 7 or 8 hours but tanks in my kitchen and people like to leave the lights on at night not sure if the bothers it my fish still hide and sleep i have 3 fish 4 blu crabs not sure on snails. and one green emerald crab who hides and peeks out ever week just to show hes ok lol.
