Black Tang

I was wondering what the care level are for these guys. I was thinking about adding a large one to my 105 and wanted to get some feedback on the care for these. Also I would like to ask if it would be ok to add one to the tank if I already have a semi-aggressive powder blue tang.

I wouldn't risk adding another tang to the 105gal- especially, with an already established Powder Blue there....

Those pewder blues are very aggresive ur black tang doesn't stand a chance.

Even though I've never had either one. I definately wouldn't risk it with a powder blue. If your tank was twice the size I would still be hesitant.

thats like adding gazelle in a lions den. powder being a lion if it was visa versa I would say go for it but being powder is already established I wouldn't attempt it!

this is a good plan.

i added a powder blue to my tank (15foot run raceway). the other tangs went into hiding ASAP even though he never seemed to act agressive at all. We never saw them out once we put him in there. They were terrified and the powder was HALF the size of the others. i removed the powder and the same day put in a HUGE 12 inch naso tang and within just a few min all of them were back out and eating out of our hands. They did not minf the naso addition at all but the power blue they hated

point is powder blue is one mean mama-jama and you should not put such an expensive fish in with him.

Did you ever see the little clip on Planet Earth (I think) where they show this patch of reef that was guarded by a pair of Powder Blue tangs? They had a patch of algae that they kept watch over and fought off any intruders. Then this huge school of convict tangs descended on them and ate up all the algae, despite the best efforts of the Powder Blues to chase them away. When the algae was gone, the convicts left, and the poor Powder Blues were left behind. I felt bad for them.

Anyway, it kinda showed the reason why they had to be so mean tempered....

thats up to the tang. they will be the same shape which can be a problem but the color is alot different so it will be hit and miss depending on your tang. my purple tang is rather large and loves everyone. i can but anything in there with him and he does nothing but try to hang out and is very nosey. on the other hand i had another purple tang that hated everyone and he had to go.

My experience with tangs is that most will not like a newcomer, tang or otherwise.

But you can take steps such as:
1. re-arranging the rockwork
2. putting a mirror against the glass
3. putting a barrier in the tank to keep them separated until they get used to eachother (examples are a piece of eggcrate, put the new fish in a hamster ball, throw a large scary object like a net in there)

These are just some methods to accomplish this, but I have found that the tangs will eventually get along. The trick is getting the newcomer through the initial onslaught without injury or mental scarring...

Had my black tang for a good two years now. Initially had ich and that lasted a few weeks. After that it was mostly smooth sailing. She'd have ich every so often but it'll disappear after a while. She's hanging out in a 60g cube right now but will be in a 270 soon.

They're quite prone to ich, or it's possibly because all fishes get ich.
With the white on black, it's distint. I had one for a while, until I traded it for something else. They're definitely nice, but a bit too expensive.
